Roofing underlayment resources

Reference material for buyers, specifiers and contractors: what the standards actually require, how to choose a sheet for a given climate, and how to check a supplier before you commit to a container. Every guide is written against published test methods rather than marketing claims.

How to use this

Where to start

These guides are written for people who have to make the call — specifiers writing a roof assembly, contractors solving a recurring leak, and importers comparing two suppliers whose data sheets look identical. Start where your problem is.

If you are specifyingNeed to write a defensible specBegin with the standards pages. ASTM D8257 covers synthetic underlayment specifically; D1970 covers self-adhered ice barrier. The spec sheet checklist turns those requirements into questions you can put to a supplier.
If you are choosingProduct A versus product BThe comparison pages cover the three decisions that come up most: ice & water shield against synthetic underlayment, house wrap against roofing underlayment, and radiant barrier against insulation. Each one ends with the conditions where the answer flips.
If you are buyingContainer-load decisionsThe supplier evaluation and roll packing guides cover what happens between agreeing a price and receiving goods — test reports, batch consistency, pallet configuration and how many rolls actually fit in a 40 ft container.

Scope

What these guides cover, and what they do not

Every claim on this site is anchored to a published test method or a code requirement we can point to. Where a figure varies by manufacturer, we say so rather than quoting a single number as if it were universal. Where the local building code governs, we say that too.

Important These pages are reference material, not a substitute for the manufacturer's current installation instructions or the authority having jurisdiction over your project. Where they conflict, the instructions and the local code win.

Coverage is limited to steep-slope roofing underlayment and the accessories that sit with it: synthetic underlayment, self-adhered ice and water barrier, house wrap and radiant barrier. Low-slope and single-ply membrane systems are outside this scope.
