DISTRIBUTOR BUYING GUIDE

Factory-Direct vs Distributor Synthetic Underlayment: Comparing Total Cost

Compare direct-order and distributor underlayment offers by product evidence, delivery scope, inventory commitment and total cost for your demand.

Describe the supply service in each offer

Ask what each supplier is offering: confirmed stock or planned production, order size, delivery service, product documents and after-sales contact. A distributor may offer local availability or smaller quantities; a direct-order supplier may offer production or branding options. Verify those services in the actual offer.

Company labels do not establish the number of intermediaries, who manufactures the product, or who takes contractual responsibility. Confirm the seller and product identity rather than treating a factory-direct website description as independent production evidence.

Compare total cost without assuming a margin saving

Start with the same acceptable product and quantity, then identify relevant freight, handling, storage, financing, inspection and destination costs. Record the quotation validity and the delivery scope so a service is not counted twice.

ICC’s Incoterms overview explains the allocation of defined costs, risk and obligations. Confirm the chosen term and named place with the transaction parties. A FOB reference and a local delivered offer cannot be compared as if they included the same services.

Use the quantities and dates from your own offers. There is no universal container threshold, annual volume or percentage discount that proves direct ordering will be cheaper.

Use demand and replenishment to choose the commitment

Check expected sell-through, usable warehouse space, cash tied up and the effect of a delayed shipment. Compare the cost of a smaller replenishment order with the commitment of holding more stock.

RIDGELOCK’s published standard RL format is 100 GSM, 48 in × 250 ft, with 1,000 sq ft gross area and 56 rolls per pallet. The starting quantity is one pallet, with a published USD 29.50 FOB roll reference. A container is not the published minimum for this standard format.

Confirm production, dispatch and transit separately, and avoid treating an estimate as a guaranteed arrival date.

Evaluate branding and consistency as separate requirements

Private labeling is a programme with an agreed product, artwork, packing and document scope. It does not by itself guarantee customer loyalty, an exclusive product or insulation from price comparison.

The published RIDGELOCK private-label starting point is six pallets. Typical production is 25–30 days after artwork approval, and the one-time brand setup reference is USD 600 shared across its product lines within the agreed scope. Confirm what the quotation includes.

Whichever channel you choose, agree product identification, inspection and acceptance arrangements. A direct relationship and a distributor relationship both need evidence that the actual product meets the agreed order.

Buyer questions

Is factory-direct supply always cheaper?
No. Compare actual offers for an acceptable product on the same quantity, delivery and service basis, including the inventory commitment and relevant costs. The channel label alone cannot establish savings.
Do I need to buy a container of standard RL underlayment?
The published standard RL starting point is one pallet of 56 rolls. Confirm the available shipment arrangement, quantity and final quotation; a full container is not the stated standard MOQ.
Does private labeling guarantee exclusivity or repeat sales?
No such result follows from branding alone. Define the construction, artwork, document coverage and any agreed commercial rights in the actual programme. Demand and customer retention require their own evidence.

Sources and editorial scope

Editorial source check: 16 October 2026. Standards references use public publisher information, not a full-standard procedure review or certification of the supplied product. RIDGELOCK links record published ordering references, subject to the agreed quotation.
